Good luck getting even 3 this year the way they are playing.

I figured Weiss had accidently taken the Beta-Max equipment with him when he left NE and that was the problem.

Maybe he just needs to get Belichick's cameras installed in the stadiums : ) Hey, if you can't laugh, you might cry.....I was thinking...The seniors are Tyrone's, the juniors are 70/30, as Tyron had started recruiting, Charlie didn't resume until after the superbowl. So the Frosh/Sophs are his. If in 2 years we don't see a substantial change, I might be thinking differently about things...I'd sign up for 3-4 wins this year, it is definitley going to be UGLY..

I'm not sure he can't recruit - supposedly he had one of the best recruiting classes in the country last year. I'm just not sure he is as good a head coach as people thought he would be.

Boy I can't imagine Marshall winning more than 2 games this year and both of those will be if they are lucky. However, I think Marshall has a better shot at winning first. They play an equally bad Rice team on Oct 27 while ND has to wait until Mid Nov to face Duke.

Ah Bill,
I figured it was coming. I've been watching and waiting.....That's OK. No, I don't want him fired. The man has proven he can coach, I just don't think he can recruit. Too much time in the pros, where only $$$ recruits. Of course that happens at some D1 schools as well, but not ND. I believe this will go down as the worst year in ND football. But he can still coach. He has NO tools at his disposal. The O-line is high school caliber at best. At a school like ND, recruiting is even more difficult due to the high standards missing from the LSU/Florida/USC's off the world. He needs to get himself a top notch recruiter! Think Tyrone is interested? = : ). Probably not.

That's OK, I'm not abandoning ship. We've had our ups and downs, but if the south can rise again, so can the IRISH! Besides, with my raiders at 2-2 at least I have something to root for! Side bet on who gets their first win (Marshal or ND?)

So, all you Notre Dame defenders of Charlie Weiss - how you feel about him now?

0-4 I never thought they bad as Marshall. Both wear green and both suck; We Marshall fans are honest enough to admit our coach needs to go? How about you Irish folks?

Yes, I'm really enjoying this. Nothing against the fans of the Irish but I can't see how you can continue to defend this guy and his 10 year contract.

Wow, long reply :O) thanks for coming back.

Just a couple final points from me.

My assumption on the BCS thing is due to the "At Large" Bid I thought was reserved for teams (such as ND) that aren't part of a conference. I don't think that at-large slot is reserved for a specificly ranked team - but rather whatever bowl-eligible team they want to invite. I may be wrong - but that's how I always thought it was.

Finally, I don't question the dropping of Tyrone so much as I did the contract extension that was given to Weiss (remember this is a fairly "old" post; I posted it shortly after the Weiss extension was granted) when Weiss hadn't done anything different than what Willingham did in his first year (relatively speaking based on the W-L record).

To touch on an earlier reply I left to Will - I really think rankings shouldn't be awarded to teams until after the 5th game of the season (similar to how the BCS does it now; but extend this to the AP and Coaches polls). This way those tight games that teams barely win (ND - GT) are evaulated based on the season's performance of both teams as opposed to a preconceived notion of how good each team is going into the season.

Enjoy the rest of the season

No no, my "indignant ranting" was being critical without facts. I am admittedly a fan, someone that was accepted to but did not attend and regrets it somewhat. That said, I have always liked what they stood for, which I believe is a non hypocritical stance between the pure intentions of college athletics (student first athletes) and the fact that it IS a business (their TV contract and apparel contracts). This doesn't mean they are perfect, they do make mistakes. I am deeply disappointed when they do. They made many when Davie was there, and had a few when Tyrone was there, which I think helped, with thier poor record and poor play in the end. I like that they are not party to a conference, it's like having 6 organizations ruin boxing. Do we watch rivalries because of what has happened between teams for generations, or because of what conference they belong to? Anyway...
You are still way off base with the bowl elgibility...if they get 8 wins, that means 4 losses, which while having 1, would mean losses to UCLA, USC, and probably a service academy. No way they would BCS with more than 2 losses. you forget, the BCS doesn't love them...it is mathematical. If anything, they get screwed in the polls quite often due to the dissent some coaches have. They just win a game, they drop a notch or 2. (Georgia Tech a good example). Other teams at #2 barely win (USC versus Washington State or Arizona State) and they stay where they are. Funny thing about facts, they tend to be brought into play only when they are convienent. Gerry Faust was 30-26-1 in 5 seasons, Bob Davie 35-25. So Tyrone's was similar and many coaches at other schools get dropped for having better records than that.

As for Weis. I personally wasn't excited about him. I wanted them to go after Urban Meyer, but they passed to give Tyrone another year. That was a mistake in my opinion. Still, Charlie seems to have the mentality and the discipline to make a good college coach, which coming from the pro's I was suspect of. I see nothing suspicious with the extension. Who was knocking on Tyrone's door even after the 1st eason at ND? No one. They had no worries. Charlie was being contacted from the get go, even more so after a few games when he appeared to be successful. They have a legitimate concern that a pro team will try to lure him with tons of $$$. That was never a fear with Tyrone, who is a good man, a good college coach, but not on anyone's short list iin the pro's, the way a belichick assistant does. Also don't forget, while they played well under Tyrone, their offense was anemic...the defense won games for them. No one thought Tyrone was going to get the offense going, he had 3 years to try. Charlie stepped in and they became a juggernaut in 1 year....

I have no problem with comments questioning their popularity...it can't be denied....Like the Yankees you love them or hate them (I'm a Mets fan). As for Jason Whitlock, he's a hack that wanted to bring the color of one's skin into it. ND is far from racist. They wanted to win, they wanted a coach that brought differrent tools to the table. Tyrone is an intelligent man, but not a great motivator (as the lethargic 26 point blowouts showed) and he also never became one with the student body the way Charlie has. That's no knock on him, he just didn't fit that way. It's nice for Whitlock to use the race card, where was he 3 years earlier when they were making "history" hiring Tyrone? Can't have it both ways.

Enough from me for 1 day...cool site, I was glad to stumble onto it this morning. Be well Bill, we can agree to disagree, in the end you seem like a fine family man, glad to debate this with you.

Looks like I hit a sensitive spot there bub, is that why your ranting in indignation because someone had the gall to question all might ND.

I'm pretty clear in my BLOG that this is all my opinion. This isn't a news article; but an opinion.

Your right, they aren't GUARANTEED a BCS birth with 8 wins - but it is highly likely. Whether I like it or not it is ND and due to their huge fan base having them in a bowl game is worth alot of money. 8 wins are all they need to be bowl eligible and if they are eligible I believe (again, this is my opinion) that they will get an invite to, most likely, a BCS bowl (as opposed to some lame duck bowl like the GMAC Bowl). Their popularity (and thus the $$ involved) basically guarantees them a BCS birth even if the rules don't.

Ty's first season ended at 10-3. Pretty good I'd say. His second season sucked (5-7, with four of those losses by 26+ points). His final season was 6-5; for a total record of 21-15. (How you like the facts - do they make you feel better?)

Your right, Weiss didn't start as well (he lost his first game) yet they still gave him a contract extension. Coupled with this tidbit I missed - that you were so generous to bring to my attention - it makes his contract extension look even that much more suspicious.

Exactly what is your problem with my comment other than it questions ND's popularity and the $30million contract Weiss received?

Funny to see a fool with totally unaccurate stats in his blog be critical of Notre Dame. Learn the facts and be knowledgeable before tooting off. ND isn't gauranteed a BCS by 8 wins. It is based on their ranking not # of wins. Also didn't know the TV contract. Admittedly didn't know or even bother to check how Tyrone's 1st season ended....wrong about starting off 5-0 in Weis' 1st year, and wrong about the $$$ paid to him. Is there anythign you actually knew was correct before your mouth opened up? Probably not. Good thing you're not a journalist.....then again....maybe you are....it would explain a few things....

Is there anythign you actually knew was correct before your mouth opened up? Probably not. Good thing you’re not a journalist…..then again….maybe you are….it would explain a few things….
