Womens Basketball

I have never really cared much for womens basketball. I find it pretty boring even if it is filled with fundamentally sound players and teams. I prefer the highflying dunks and vicious rejections of the mens game. However, because I have two daughters, I am trying to find some pleasure in watching the ladies play. This year it was a little easier to pay attention because the WVU womens basketball team made it to the NIT championship game after a hard fought win over Kentucky that went into 2 overtimes.

I’m not going to lie though – I didn’t know the WVU women were in the NIT until after they beat Kentucky. The championship game, I believe, was played last night. It wasn’t on normal TV, it wasn’t on cable, it was on the West Virgina Public Broadcasting channel (PBS). I had never heard of PBS carrying a sporting event (live even) but that was the only channel that was willing to show the game. When last I looked WVU was losing by about 8 points. I didn’t stay up long enough to watch the whole game (remember, I don’t really like the sport, and so sleep is a higher priority – I would have done the same for the NCAA Mens Championship game).

I figured I would be able to turn on my computer today, login to espn.com or cnnsi.com, and quickly see the results as a headline, or even a sub-headline, somewhere on the page. This was a national championship game afterall. Oh, how wrong I was. I have looked, dug, searched, and scoured these prominent websites hoping to see just a score from last night but there is nothing. What’s up with that? I know very few people, in general, watch women’s basketball but the championship game could at least get a single line somewhere!

I really hope Shannon and Emily take up soccer. At least it gets some respect in this country as a vible womens sport – plus it is just as much fun to watch as mens soccer – hell, they are the same sport really just with slighly smaller players.

If your curious SMS beat WVU 78-70 – i finally found the score at womensnit.com a poorly thrown together website that just has the scores listed by round. How sad.
